David Pacholko, Artist Statement
For me, painting is an intimate and private experience I embark upon each time I face a canvas. I re-visit past and present life experiences and allow my intuition to guide me through this process. I paint what I feel and not from a preliminary sketch or object. My works are guided by my intuition and love of colour and re-capturing a fleeting moment or experience gone by. The paintings are a reflection of the emotional connection I have with colour, light and energy in recounting my surroundings and experiences.
That is how I approached my recent series of work, (titled The Laurentien Collection). Inspired in part by the colours of Laurentien pencil crayons and a recent trip driving across Canada.
Each canvas takes on a life of its own with a myriad of abstract shapes, textures, brush strokes and a vivid colour palette. Each work represents a specific moment, simplified somewhat and reinterpreted with bold hues, dashes of brushwork and applications and literally takes on an energy and direction of its own with no script, as it comes from within in that moment.
David knew he was on his way to a career in art in some shape and form when he won his first art competition in grade 6. Upon graduation from highschool David took his Art Bursary scholarships and enrolled in art school at VCC, Langara. After graduating in the top of his class he promptly applied his newly honed Graphic Design and Advertising skills working for various firms in the design industry. Since then he has enjoyed a distinguished career as a public art artist and graphic designer winning multiple awards at the local, national and international level for his design work under his design studio, David James Design.
In 2006 David discovered his fine art voice and embarked on a dual career as a designer and visual artist. Drawing upon his graphic design expertise his contemporary mixed media imagery is colourful, insightful, whimsical and at times emotional. Today he splits his time between his graphic design and his fine art work, which resides in private collections.
