Spoken Word artists Ronnie Dean Harris and Valeen Jules will perform at the reception.
Carrielynn Victor, Xemontalot has created her work throughout the last two years, focusing on the utilization of traditional formal elements of Coast Salish design culture, paired with colours and shapes that work together to give a three-dimensional geometric look. Victor shares stories of her own as well as stories (Sxwowxwiyam) that provides snapshots of Sto:lo history and worldviews.
The works share the fusion of those listed elements, as well as the common thread of story.
The artist sources her art practice through both research and lived experiences.
Carrielynn, her family and her studio are based in Cheam, her father’s family’s ancestral village located on the banks of the lower Fraser River, in the shadow of Mt. Cheam. She is currently managing a cultural and environmental consultancy, where the technical and political aspects of her work provide inspiration for her art as well.
Bracken Hanuse Corlett an interdisciplinary artist who often mixes media and meaning. His work is rooted in sacred form and story from his Indigenous lineage – Wuikinuxv, Klahoose, Tla’amin and Kwakwaka’wakw. In this last year I have worked on screenplays, graphic design for a video game, video design for theatre, illustration for animation, large scale paintings and murals, as well as live audio-visual performance. Working in these ways goes beyond paying the bills. It feeds the artist’s energy and keeps him awake in what he is doing. Hanuse Corlett is interested in being uncomfortable – in trying a new medium or re-visiting one that may have been abandoned.
The Plaskett Gallery is located in the Massey Theatre complex and is open 1 to 5pm Tuesday to Saturday, one hour before and during performances in the Massey Theatre or by appointment.
