Massey Theatre presents an afternoon of local arts display and live entertainment for the annual New West Cultural Crawl.
Massey Theatre has been a proud supporter of the annual Cultural Crawl, a two day free arts & cultural festival showcasing New West creative talent, now stepping in its 13th year. This year, Massey Theatre and Plaskett Gallery will host a special event on the second day of the festival on Sunday August 14th from 1pm to 5pm, showcasing artworks of different mediums by local artists. Located in the heart of New West in the lively uptown (735 Eighth Avenue), this free family-friendly event is a must in your Cultural Crawl route.
In the lobby of the theatre, New West artist Debra McKenzie’s eight sculptures will capture your attention right as you enter building. Hung from the ceiling in the lobby and on the Massey Theatre stage are nearly fifty quilts from the Little Group, a group of passionate quilters also based in the Royal City. You will also have the chance to witness artworks coming to life right before your eyes. Eileen Fong, a Burnaby artist specializes in Chinese painting; and Annaliese Meyer, a youth artist from New West will be stationed in the orchestra pit of the theatre as they interact with their surrounding through paintbrushes on their canvas. You may also choose to sit back and enjoy live performances on stage by VanDeca, a choir composed of emerging young musicians, and a jazz trio led by piano player Jonathan Tobin. Community members young and old are invited to explore the building at their own pace.
Installed in the Plaskett Gallery will be Carol-Ann Gupta’s acrylic exhibition éveil – directly translated from French as “Awakening” or “Arousal”. This solo exhibition will be available to the public from August 9th to September 3rd every Tuesday to Saturday from 1pm to 5pm.
Stepping into its 66th year in operation, Massey Theatre continues its mandates to develop local artistic capacity and community engagement.
