Artist Statement:
It was my maternal grandmother who taught me to quilt. Not the easiest grandchild to teach because I am left-handed, and she wasn’t. She tried gamely to switch but eventually gave it up and taught me the only way she could. To this day, all of my handwork is done with my right hand.
Most of what I make is inspired firstly by the colour schemes and their overall impact, and secondly by the techniques involved. Occasionally I’ve taken classes to learn a particular design or technique, or how to use a new tool. But what I have enjoyed the most is the exchange of ideas and skills with other quilting friends, many through a local quilting guild, Pacific Spirit Quilters’ Guild.
My quilts include both traditional and modern designs. I am drawn to the clean look of modern quilts yet also love to incorporate hand embroidery and applique to create a much more personal piece. It’s time-consuming therapy and always a joyful experience. Many of my quilts have found homes through charitable organizations and shelters, or landed in the laps of friends and family.
The Plaskett Gallery is open 1 pm to 4 pm Tuesday to Friday and by appointment. It is also open before all shows and during intermission.
